Platelet concentration factor
How many times more concentrated platelets are in the final PRP than in whole blood. Preparation systems differ widely; the factor is a key variable when comparing protocols and published results.
The platelet concentration factor states how many times more concentrated platelets are in a finished PRP preparation than in the patient’s whole blood — baseline count in, final count out, expressed as a fold increase. It is the single most informative number for describing what a PRP system actually produces, and the most commonly missing one.
It matters because PRP is a category, not a product. Preparations in clinical use range from barely above whole blood to several-fold concentrated, depending on system design, spin protocol and technique — and the published hair studies span that whole range, which is a large part of why their results disagree. Comparing two PRP services, or two trials, without knowing the concentration factor is comparing unlabelled doses. Composition varies alongside concentration — leucocyte and red-cell content differ from system to system, and each changes the biology of what is injected.
The dose–response question remains genuinely unsettled. Concentration is plainly relevant, but more is not established as better: parts of the wider PRP literature suggest very high concentrations may add nothing or even inhibit the intended response, and an optimal range for hair applications has not been pinned down. The honest position for a clinic is not to chase a maximum but to know its own number and keep it consistent, so that its outcomes mean something.
Knowing the number is laboratory work, not brochure work: run baseline and final platelet counts on a haematology analyser for a sample of preparations, re-verify periodically, and record the factor in the protocol alongside spin parameters and kit batch details. Suppliers should provide validation data for their systems; clinics should spot-check rather than inherit the claim. A service that cannot state its concentration factor is delivering an unknown — repeatedly, and at a price. The habit costs little against what a PRP programme charges, and it converts a marketing claim into a laboratory fact.
